History of Castle Caldicot
Originally constructed by the Normans in the late 12th century, this impressive fortress was strategically built to control the River Severn and protect the surrounding countryside. With its towering stone keep and sturdy defensive walls, Castle Caldicot served as a symbol of Norman power while offering protection from Welsh uprisings.
Over time, the castle evolved from a military stronghold into a grand country residence. A fun historical twist? During the 1960s housing crisis, the castle was actually divided into flats and maisonettes! Despite this modern chapter, much of its medieval charm remains intact.
How to visit
Today, you can wander through the ancient gatehouse, climb the towers for breathtaking views, and stroll the beautiful grounds. Best of all, the castle is free to visit—making it an ideal stop for a family adventure. There is ample parking and a playground for the children next to the parking lot. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a scenic outing, Castle Caldicot has something for everyone!
