Review: “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” at Overture Center Madison

As I settled into my seat at the Overture Center Madison, the anticipation in the air was palpable. “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” had finally made its way to our city, and I was beyond excited to experience the story of the legendary Tina Turner unfold on stage.

From the first electrifying note, the show had me hooked. The production opened with a powerful rendition of “Nutbush City Limits,” instantly transporting the audience to Tina’s humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee. The vibrant choreography and dynamic set design set the tone for an evening filled with energy, emotion, and sheer entertainment.

One of the standout elements of the show was the incredible performance by the lead actress, Zurin Villanueva, whose portrayal of Tina Turner was nothing short of phenomenal. Her voice was a force of nature, capturing the raw power and emotion that Tina is known for. She navigated through Tina’s tumultuous journey with grace, seamlessly transitioning from moments of vulnerability to scenes of triumph. It was a performance that paid homage to Tina’s resilience and indomitable spirit.

The supporting cast was equally impressive, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. The actor playing Ike Turner (Deon Releford-Lee) delivered a chilling performance, capturing the complexity of their tumultuous relationship with a mix of charisma and menace. The ensemble cast, with their impeccable dance moves and vocal prowess, added layers of richness to the storytelling, making every scene come alive.

What truly set this musical apart was its ability to balance the highs and lows of Tina’s life. The show didn’t shy away from the darker aspects of her story, addressing the struggles and challenges she faced with honesty and sensitivity. Yet, it also celebrated her incredible achievements and the joy she brought to millions through her music. The emotional journey was beautifully complemented by a setlist of Tina’s greatest hits, including “Proud Mary,” “River Deep – Mountain High,” and the iconic “Simply the Best.” Each song was a showstopper, bringing the audience to their feet and turning the theater into a concert-like experience.

The production design was a visual feast, with stunning costumes that paid tribute to Tina’s iconic style and a versatile set that seamlessly transitioned between different eras and locations. The lighting and special effects added an extra layer of drama, enhancing the storytelling and creating an immersive experience.

As the final curtain fell, the entire theater erupted into a well-deserved standing ovation. “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” is a triumphant celebration of an icon who defied the odds and became a symbol of strength and resilience. It’s a show that leaves you feeling inspired, uplifted, and filled with admiration for the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

If you have the chance to see this musical, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on the world and a testament to the enduring legacy of Tina Turner.

Thank you, Overture Center Madison, for bringing this unforgettable experience to our city.
