Hello, Lo+Mo readers! Katy here, and I’m excited to share one of the coolest aspects of road tripping in an RV: the unexpected, delightful places you discover along the way. On our latest family adventure, we found ourselves enchanted by the charm of Idaho Falls, Idaho. This city, nestled along the Snake River, offered us some unforgettable experiences that we stumbled upon purely by chance.

Exploring History at Eagle Rock Ferry and Taylor’s Bridge
Our first stop was the historic site of the Eagle Rock Ferry. This site takes you back to the early days of Idaho Falls when it was a critical crossing point over the Snake River. Standing there, we could almost imagine the ferries bustling with pioneers and settlers. The kids were fascinated by the tales of early travelers and the significance of the ferry in shaping the region’s history.

Next, we visited the site of Taylor’s Bridge. This was another step back in time, as the bridge played a crucial role in connecting communities and fostering trade. The remnants of the old bridge and the historical markers gave us a glimpse into the past, making it an educational stop for the entire family. The lush greenery and serene river views provided a perfect backdrop for some quiet reflection and family photos.

Sweet Treats at “The Caboose”
After soaking up some history, it was time for a treat. We headed to “The Caboose,” an ice cream store located in a stationary train caboose. This place quickly became a family favorite! The novelty of getting ice cream from a train caboose was exciting for the kids, and the delicious flavors kept everyone happy. We sat on the picnic tables outside, enjoying our ice cream while the kids pretended they were on a grand train adventure. It’s these little moments that make road trips so special.

Why We Love RV Road Trips
Traveling in an RV gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and discover hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Idaho Falls wasn’t on our original itinerary, but stumbling upon this charming town added so much richness to our trip. The ability to stop wherever we want, take detours, and truly experience the journey is what makes RV road tripping so unique.

Tips for RV Road Tripping
- Stay Flexible: Allow for spontaneous stops and changes in your route. Some of the best experiences come from unplanned detours.
- Do Some Research: While spontaneity is great, having a rough idea of interesting places along your route can help you make the most of your trip.
- Pack Essentials: Make sure your RV is stocked with everything you need for comfort and convenience, including plenty of snacks, games for the kids, and a good camera to capture all the memories.
Idaho Falls was a delightful surprise on our road trip, and we wouldn’t have discovered it without the freedom our RV gave us. From the historic sites to the whimsical ice cream stop at “The Caboose,” our time there was filled with learning, laughter, and sweet treats. If you’re planning an RV adventure, I highly recommend keeping an eye out for these hidden gems—they’re what make the journey truly unforgettable.
Happy travels, and may your road be filled with unexpected joys and delightful discoveries!
Until next time,
Katy
