On our adventure “out west” we made a memorable roadside stop at the Freedom Rock in Menlo, Iowa. This inspiring monument, painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, honors veterans and serves as a vibrant symbol of freedom. The original Freedom Rock is part of Sorensen’s project to place a painted rock in each of Iowa’s 99 counties.
Easily accessible from Interstate 80, this tribute sits just a short drive from the main highway, making it a perfect detour for travelers. The vivid murals depicting scenes of patriotism and sacrifice offer a poignant reminder of the bravery and dedication of our service members.
Mr. Sorensen repaints the rock every year in time for Memorial Day. Whether you’re passing through or planning a visit, the Freedom Rock is a heartfelt stop worth making.
