As I sit in the passenger seat of my brand new RV, I’m contemplating how I got here. By most people’s perception I’m pretty fancy. I’m certainly no camper. I like five-star hotels, getting dressed up, manicures and pedicures, and have an enviable selection of designer purses. I shower and wash my hair every. single. day, sometimes twice a day. I absolutely love champagne. I don’t use public toilets, and generally speaking “nature” (by which I mean mosquitos, bears, and other creatures that appear in the night with the express intent of eating humans) terrifies me.
So the expression on the faces of my friends when I told them I was buying an A-Class Motorhome to travel around the lower 48 were both unsurprising and hilarious.
Since I was a teenager growing up in England I have watched American TV shows and movies that fueled a burning desire in me to Road Trip (that I have mostly been able to totally suppress because of “nature”). With my 40th birthday looming in two years, and my children growing up far too quickly, I don’t know if this is some kind of mid-life crisis, or a craving for something different, but about a week ago my husband and I signed the paperwork and waltzed out of the RV dealership the proud new owners of a Thor Vegas A-Class RUV.
Growing up my family would take camping trips in England and France. My sister and I would look forward to them every year. There was a camaraderie in the campgrounds that felt like home. I suppose I’m looking for some of that for my own kids. The last hotel my son stayed in with me was an $1100 suite at The Shangri-La at The Shard in London. When we stay at these hotels it’s certainly a fabulous experience, but it’s not about meeting people and making friends. I’m all for my children experiencing the best things in life, but I’m also aware that the best things in life aren’t always five star lodgings and international travel. My children were born in an incredible country with rich history and gorgeous landscapes. I know that one of the best things in their life can be learning all about their home country and its beautiful terrain. Someday I’ll figure out how to give them the same kind of experiences in my country of birth.
With all this love of luxury, there is still a camp-girl at heart. She’s just been hidden under a layer of YSL foundation and a haze of Chanel perfume. I’m going to find the happy medium, and I’m excited to have you along for the ride!
Love, Katy
